17 May 2003
Candice Yong, 13 years old, sacrificed a notebook, key chain, a fish and chips meal and a glass of bubble tea this week, all because she wanted to use the money saved to donate to The Courage Fund.
Candice is one of the many students of Cedar Girls’ Secondary School who have made personal sacrifices for the Fund. Every year, the school raises money during the kindness week in aid of charitable organisations under the Community Chest. This year, the money they raise from 12 to 16 May will go to The Courage Fund.
“I am very happy that the students respond so positively. This year, we are donating towards The Courage Fund because it is the most urgent cause,” said Miss Susan Leong, Principal.
Exams have just started today for the students of Cedar Girls’ Secondary School and will end on 2 June.
Youths from the NPCC uniform group of New Town Secondary School also gave $547.30. Other donations came from Bukit Panjang Government High School Advisory Committee, Peicai Secondary School and Yuying Secondary School Alumni with amounts $3,000, $1,200 and $2,000 respectively.
During the school closure in April, students of Bukit Panjang Government High School handmade 800 colourful friendship bands. When the school reopened, they sold the bands to raise money for the Fund. Their contributions bring today’s public donations to $23,691.30.
Strong support came from various religious groups today. Puat Jit Buddhist Temple contributed $20,000, Singapore Buddhist Federation Foundation and Zu-Lin Temple Association gave $10,000 each, Nan Hai Fei Lai Temple gave $7,831, Lian Chee Kek Buddhist Temple gave $6,097 while Man Fut Tong Welfare Friendly Society and Church of St Alphonsus Redemption Community (Novena Church) donated $5,000 each. Fairfield Methodist Church also gave $1,000. These contributed to the total of $75,528 from corporate donations today.
The daily breakdown is as follows:
Corporate Donations $5,356,936.32
New donations today $75,528.00
Total to date $5,432,464.32
Public Donations $3,250,179.14
New donations today $23,691.30

The Fund to date stands at $8,706,334.76. This sum does not include the government’s $1M contribution and dollar-for-dollar match.
