NHG Annual Scientific Congress 2008:
"Science, Medicine & Lifestyle - Impact on Tomorrow's Health"

The National Healthcare Group (NHG) is pleased to present the 6th NHG Annual Scientific Congress (ASC) on 7 and 8 November 2008. The largest annual scientific meeting in Singapore since its inception in 2002, the event will see more than 3,000 participants, including doctors, dentists, nurses, paramedical professionals and research scientists from Singapore and overseas, are expected.

The theme for this year's congress is "Science, Medicine & Lifestyle - Impact on Tomorrow's Health", emphasizing on the importance of translating science into clinical practice while managing our lifestyle and environment to optimize health outcomes in the present and future.

Over 450 scientific papers covering multidisciplinary perspectives will be shared during this two-day Congress by a total of 170 local and international speakers. For the first time, medical students from the National University of Singapore will be showcasing their scientific papers at the congress as well.

Plenary Lectures (7 November 2008, 1.30pm - 2.15pm)

Speaker 1 Dr. Michael Meaney, Ph.D., C.Q., FRSC
Director, Programme for the Study of Behaviour, Genes and Environment, McGill University, Canada

Dr. Michael Meaney was one of the first researchers to identify the importance of maternal care in modifying the expression of genes that regulate behavioural and neuroendocrine responses to stress, as well as hippocampal synaptic development.
At NHG ASC 2008, he will be delivering a lecture on "The Development of Individual Differences in Health and Capacity".

Speaker 2 Dr. Philippe Kourilsky
Chairman, Singapore Immunology Network (SIgn), A*STAR, Singapore Chair of Molecular Immunology, College de France, France

Dr. Philippe Kourilsky's specialises in Immunology Research.

At the NHG ASC 2008, he will be delivering a lecture on "What Limits Innovation in Drugs and Vaccine".

  • NHG Eye Institute International Opthalmology Congress (23 - 25 Oct 2008)
    Held at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, the inaugural International Opthalmology Congress will review the latest advances in medical and surgical treatments, and breakthroughs in Ophthalmology. Themed, "Advances in Vitreoretina and Uveitis", the congress will service as an international platform for trainees and opthalmologists to engage in discussion through a series of symposia. One of the highlights include the sharing of new concepts in surgical retina, including minimally invasive vitreous surgery (MIVS)

  • My Research Career Development in NHG (8 Nov 2008)
    In NHG's continual efforts to support clinical research at NHG, the Research and Development Office (RDO) is administering two major funding programmes, the NHG-NUS Clinician Leadership in Research (CLR) Programme and the Investigator Clinician (IC) Track, to support clinicians who wants to pursue a research career. This symposium will feature the presentation of projects by CLR graduates as well as the Awards Ceremony for the CLR and IC Track.

  • The 6th Singapore AIDS Conference 2008 (8 Nov 2008)
    Themed, "Fight the Disease, Fight the Stigma", the conference will give attendees the latest information on strategies to fight the disease. Attendees will be updated on how to reduce new infections and support people living with HIV. Keynote speaker, Mr JVR Prasado Rao, Director, Regional Support Team, UNAIDS, Asia Pacific, will be sharing on the topic, "AIDS in Asia - Refining the Epidemic, Crafting an Effective Response". He will be joined by Professor Andrew Grulich, Head of HIV Epidemiology and Prevention Programme, National Centre in HIV Prevention and Clinical Research, University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia, who will discuss on the necessary components to a successful HIV programme.

  • Healthcare Leaders' Panel Discussion (8 Nov 2008)
    Key healthcare leaders have been invited to share their thoughts on the current and future landscape of healthcare in Singapore. They will discuss and review the whole approach to healthcare towards Singapore's rapidly graying nation as a fifth of her population enters the "Third Age". The conversation will explore the concept of "Slow Medicine" - a slower and more deliberate approach to care for the mature and elderly population, and examine the challenges socially, scientifically and financially.

    The moderator of the discussion is Professor Edison Liu, Executive Director, Genome Institute of Singapore. The panelists are:

  • ASC 2008 Awards Presentation (7 Nov 2008)
    Dr Dennis McCullough, the NHG Distinguished Visitor, will be delivering the 6th NHG Lecture at the Congress dinner. He is the author of the best-seller "My Mother, Your Mother: Embracing "Slow Medicine" - The Compassionate Approach to Caring for your Aging Loved Ones." He will also present the following awards:
    1. Lee Foundation-NHG Lifetime Achievement Award
    2. NHG Distinguished Achievement Award
    3. NHG Outstanding Citizenship Award
    4. NHG Distinguished Contributor Award

  • MOU Signing Ceremony (8 Nov 2008)
    NHG's extending influence and high standards of quality is reaffirmed with the collaboration and partnership with Health Sciences Authority (HSA), St Luke's Hospital and Joanna Briggs Institute. This MOU Signing Ceremony will see NHG's Group Domain Specific Review Boards being appointed as HSA and St Luke Hospital's Research Ethics Oversight Committee. The MOU with Joanna Briggs Institute will see the establishment of the HSOR Collaborating Centre for Evidence Based Health Services Management: A Collaborating Centre of The Joanna Briggs Institute.
