The Courage Fund is pleased to announce that the Courage Awards will be presented in respective institutions to healthcare workers (HCWs) who were in the frontline against Sars.
The Courage Awards, announced in July, give direct recognition to frontline HCWs who had treated SARS patients during the outbreak in Singapore in the second quarter of this year. These healthcare workers had demonstrated immense courage and self-sacrifice during the SARS crisis.
The awardees were nominated by their respective hospitals and organisations which were involved in the fight against Sars. The awards will be presented to them by their respective management in private functions.
The Awards are in two categories:
Courage Star – A medallion and $2,000 cash award
This category is for HCWs who had directly tended to Sars patients during the Sars episode. They were the dedicated caregivers who tended to known Sars patients, requiring continual interaction with Sars patients throughout the major part of the Sars episode, and hence given to multiple exposures to the risk of Sars infection.
Courage Medal - A medallion and a $500 cash award
This category is for HCWs who worked in a unit that had provided patient care to Sars patients transiting through ie. in the wards, or at primary care clinics, or at triage points where some patients they had tended to eventually turned out to be Sars patients.
A total of 1715 Courage Stars and 3538 Courage Medals will be awarded. These will go to 783 doctors, 2352 nurses and 2118 allied health and ancillary staff. The awardees come from a total of 55 institutions, covering hospitals, other healthcare institutions, ambulances services, support organistions and private GPs.
Expenditure on the Courage Awards amounted to $5.5 million. |
