23 April 2003
Over $600,000 boost for The Courage Fund

A man walked into the NHG office at Commonwealth Lane with a $200,000 cheque on Monday, 21 April. He requested anonymity.

Two other donors not only gave their money but also offered their thoughts and understanding for our patients and their valiant healthcare workers.

Ang Chai Hong and Ang Liew Kwee shares their sympathy with patients for not being able to receive visitors: “It can be really painful to be ill and not being able to seek solace in your family…it is equally painful for the family members who could not offer comfort.

In this situation, the care of nurses is all the more important to the patients. Thank you, to all who work relentlessly to gain ground on the fight against SARs and make the general public feel safer in going about with our daily routine. But I regret to say that most of us are saying thank you from a distance because we are not courageous enough to go near.”

The Singapore Hokien Huay Kuan sent in $300,000. The United Overseas Bank Limited (UOB) gave $200,000.

The Courage Fund receives each of these donations, large or small, with heartfelt thanks. We know each donation, and each donor, is motivated by the generous spirit that people from all walks of life in Singapore share.

Today’s donations bring the total amount raised to date to $3,225,783.31. This sum does not include the government’s $1M contribution and dollar-for-dollar match.

The daily breakdown is as follows:

Corporate Donations $1,310,346.92
New donations today $ 552,460.00
Total to date $1,862,806.92

Public Donations $1,242,784.38
