Professor Feng Pao Hsii
A man of many talents and vision, Prof Feng has contributed significantly to the medical profession and to the community. In August 1995, Prof Feng established the only Department of Rheumatology in Singapore at the TTSH and became its first head. In recognition of his role as "Father of Rheumatology", the Singapore Society of Immunology, Allergy and Rheumatology (SSIAR) established and inaugurated the "Feng Pao Hsii Lecture" in July 2000. Through the SSIAR, Prof Feng established links with regional and international associations of Rheumatology. This placed TTSH and Singapore on the Rheumatology world map. Prof Feng was the president of the Asia Pacific League of Associations for Rheumatology (APLAR) from 1996 to 1998. In 1997, Singapore was the proud host of the World Rheumatology (ILAR) Congress with Prof Feng as the Chairman of the local organising committee.
Prof Feng was instrumental in initiating and supporting the development of sub-specialties such as Clinical Immunology / Allergy (CIA) and Infectious Disease in Singapore. TTSH is thus the only hospital in Singapore with specialists trained in CIA and has the largest Infectious Disease department in Singapore. During his various leadership tenures, he was also instrumental in nurturing the development of Rehabilitation Medicine and Medical Intensive Care in TTSH.
Prof Feng’s contribution to the Singapore medical profession goes beyond the training and grooming of many young specialists. He has played active roles in the Singapore Medical Association, College of Family Physicians Singapore (CFPS), Academy of Medicine Singapore (AM) and the Singapore Medical Council. In addition, he has held appointments such as member of the National Medical Research Council, Panel Advisor for the Drug Information Service, Pharmaceutical Department, Ministry of Health, and the Civil Aviation Medical Board. For his contributions and commitment to medicine, teaching and the public in Singapore, Prof Feng was conferred several awards including the Albert Lim Medal from CFPS, Gold Medal from AM, and the Singapore Government Public Administration Medals (silver in 1986 and gold in 1997).
Prof Feng has authored / co-authored over 170 publications in local, regional and international journals as well as chapters in books. He was one of the first in the world to use cyclophosphamide in the treatment of lupusand this culminated in his paper in the British Medical Journal on the use of cyclophosphamide in the treatment of lupus in 1973. In 1997, Prof Feng successfully produced the first issue of the APLAR journal, the official publication of APLAR. Besides being the editor-in-chief of this journal, Prof Feng is also on the editorial board of several established international publications. A good teacher orator, he has received many teaching engagements and lectureships including the prestigious Galloway Memorial Lecture in 1983 and the Seah Cheng Siang Memorial Lecture in 2000.
Prof Feng believes that a doctor’s role goes beyond diagnosis and prescription of drugs to patients. Hence, he helped establish the National Arthritis Foundation (NAF) and kept it going through regular fund raising campaigns which he would often personally supervise in spite of his many professional commitments. Under his able guidance, the Singapore Ankylosing Spondylitis Society now comes under the umbrella of NAF while the Lupus Association Singapore, set up under the NAF, has matured to become an independent patient support group.
