Programmes/Activities
Research & Medical Capability Development:
1. Research & Development Projects
    a. Small Innovative Grant (SIG) I
This program supports modest size exploratory
    innovative studies.

    b. Small Innovative Grant (SIG) II
This program is a follow-on-grant for successful SIG I
Projects which have demonstrated potential in
translating basic discoveries into the prevention,
diagnosis, treatment and cure of diseases, or in building
    clinical research capabilities.

    c. Research Informatics Manpower
This is to manage the research data base and on-line
    research and training portal.

    d. CEO’s Special Research Fund (CSRF)
The objective of this grant is to provide seed-funding
and to develop and support young/pilot research
programmes in disease-centric areas. It aims to enable
them to compete for external peer-reviewed funding
within the 2-year funding, and possibly become part of
a national Translational and Clinical Research (TCR)
    Flagship Programme.

    e. NHG-NUS Clinician Leadership in Research
To groom and nurture young aspiring clinician scientists
and researchers keen on pursuing a dual career path in
research and clinical work. Grants were given to Young
    Investigators and their respective mentors.

2. Research and Development Office (RDO)
The formation of RDO is to provide pertinent central coordinated administrative support for research in NHG. RDO organises and conducts training from classroom-based courses to online e-learning courses. RDO provides research protocol review services through its centralised Institutional Review Board (IRB) and Domain Specific Review Board (DSRB).

3. Health Services Outcome Research (HSOR)
This unit was set up in Sept 2005 to conduct health services research that provides clinicians, administrators and management with timely evidence to support decisions and planning, or evaluation of clinical programs. The basis of the work focuses on outcomes that must translate to decisions or improvement.

4. Singapore Health Biomedical Conference (SHBC)
This is a major scientific event for both local and foreign healthcare practitioners from the Asia Pacific Region. The main objective is to create a platform for clinicians, investigators and scientists to discuss important scientific issues and research, and share best practices.

5. NHG Visiting Expert Scheme
The objective of this scheme is to keep the medical community in NHG institutions at the forefront of the latest medical updates and treatment techniques. It provides an avenue for NHG to invite recognised and renowned clinical healthcare experts to share their knowledge and impart their skills through a series of intensive workshop and seminars ranging from a one to two weeks, complementing the MOH HMDP Visiting Experts Programme.

6. Research Ethics Conference
This conference is the 1st Asia Pacific Research Ethics Conference focusing on Human Subject Protection. In 2008, RDO had successfully negotiated with Public Responsibility in Medicine And Research (PRIM&R) to co-organise and co-sponsor APREC 2010. The aim of this partnership is to showcase and promote the achievements of DSRB, develop a training platform for our DSRB members, and create an opportunity for sharing of best practices in this region.

7. Medical Capability Development Programme (MCDF)
The objective of MCDF is to serve as a source of bridging funds or ‘seed money’ for the setup of new clinical services or expansion of existing clinical services in key priority clinical specialties and services of major strategic importance for NHG. It aims to address gaps in the level of medical capability to make significant improvement in the standard of care, clinical quality and outcomes.

8. Medical Journal Subscriptions
NHGEF funds the subscription of on-line medical resource portal for our doctors, nurses and allied health professionals to facilitate e-learning and research.

9. NHG Distinguished Visitor and Masterclass Lecture Series
This program invites internationally renowned leaders in the healthcare industry to share their expertise in healthcare with NHG senior management, clinicians and other healthcare professionals.

Staff Training:
1. Health Manpower Development Programme (HMDP)
The objective of HMDP is to train/develop healthcare professionals to take on higher and specific jobs to meet the strategic manpower needs of NHG cluster.

2. Essentials for Clinician Teachers Course
The course is aimed at training clinicians to be better teachers and educators, and to help institutions prepare for the medical residency system and meeting the requirements of Accreditation Committee of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). This course is conducted by Partner Harvard Macy Institute.

3. Management Associate Program
The objective of this scheme is to attract top students and talented young working adults to join NHG as management trainees so as to build up a talent pool in NHG.

4. Postgraduate Self Development Award (PSDA)
The objective is to provide financial assistance to high potential NHG staff who wish to pursue Masters in general management. NHG will provide partial sponsorship for the course fees, while the awardees will co-pay a percentage of the fees.

5. Personal Training Fund (PTF)
Eligible junior medical doctors (from Medical Officers employed by NHG to Registrars) are assigned an individual budget ranging from $1,000 to $2,250 (depending on trainee’s specialty) per annum, to attend relevant clinical practice programs as approved by their supervisors. This scheme, together with other initiatives have helped NHG recruit and retain junior medical doctors.

6. NHG Leadership Program
The objective is to provide senior clinicians and healthcare administrators with a core set of knowledge and leadership skills to become future healthcare leaders. It also equips senior clinicians with leadership skills and useful management tools to manage a department.

7. NHG Postgraduate Scholarship (NPS)
The objective is to groom top-rate administrators for succession planning for CEO positions. Awardees must have the potential to assume CEO positions eventually within his/her career in NHG. NPS awardees will attend a Masters program in General Management or Healthcare Management at Internationally renowned universities (such as Stanford, Wharton, INSEAD, etc).

8. Communication Skills Courses for Clinical Staff
The objective is to provide systematic training to improve doctors’ communication skills with patients.

9. Intermediate and Long Term Care (ILTC)
This program is to work together with Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) in its effort to raise TTSH’s ILTC partners’ capability in care delivery, so as to help facilitate right-siting, reduce unnecessary referral, admission and re-admission to TTSH. This program therefore relieves TTSHs current patient load and bed situation, as well as cut down waste of acute care resources and unnecessary cost to patients.

10. Postgraduate Sponsorship - Medical / Dental
This program is to be used for school fees of our sponsored dental staff.
