In conjunction with the inaugural Healthcare Improvement Festival 2010, a workshop called Passion for Life was held on 28 & 29 January at the Pines. Conducted by Ms Anette Nilsson, from Qulturum, Jönköping, the aim of this workshop is to educate our healthcare providers and partners in step-down care to becoming facilitators of Passion for Life Cafes. At these Life Cafes, facilitators engage our elderly to empower themselves to maintain a full life at optimum health and maintain independence despite age or any other condition affecting them.
Participants to the workshop included NHG staff from different hospitals & clinics and Tsao Foundation. Most of them are directly involved in community engagement work - working directly to extend empowerment of health to the population.
Ms Nilsson shared how the PDSA wheel (Plan, Do, Study and Act) is used to enable older people to take small steps to change. Through role plays, videos and group sharings, participants learnt ways to engage the elderly to take charge of making a difference in the lives.
Participants came away from the 2-day workshop with many invaluable lessons. Many agreed that Passion for Life may be started in any social movement and is not confined to a programme for the elderly only. One comment received was that such workshops may be extended to organisations like People’s Association, Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS) and Council for 3rd Age who can work closely with various community groups to run Passion for Life Cafes. Overall, more than 75% of the participants rated the workshop as ‘Excellent’ or ‘Very Good’ and hope to see many Passion for Life groups in Singapore.
