The inaugural Clinical Incident Management Course by the Cognitive Institute was held on 23 & 24 Jun 09.
The 2-day programme trains clinicians in advanced handling of Open Disclosure and Adverse Outcomes and is designed to produce trained clinicians to talk directly or help other clinicians talk with patients about things that may have gone wrong and the patients' disappointment. This will in turn help to reduce litigation and complaints for both the hospital and the treating clinician. Moreover with the implementation of Open Disclosure Policy (“Open Disclosure is defined as open communication of incidents that result in harm to a patient while receiving health care”) in hospitals, it is especially crucial to have a team of well-trained CIM Consultants to deal with adverse events.
Feedback for the course and the trainers were excellent. The participants find the role-playing sessions very useful, as the actors (who act as patients involved in an adverse event) were able to provide immediate feedback on their performance as a CIM Consultant.
“The faculty is first class and willing to share their practical ideas on appropriate workflows that can be customized to our setting here in Singapore.”
