The Institute of Clinical Education (ICE) organised the inaugural “Essentials for Clinician Teachers Course: Learning & Teaching a New Generation of Students & Residents” from 19 – 23 Oct 09 at The Pines. This course is aimed at training clinicians to be better teachers and educators, and is also timed to help us prepare our institutions for the medical residency system starting 2010, and eventually meeting requirements of ACGME.
The response for this programme was overwhelming, and all the 50 seats were fully taken up when the nomination call was released. Participating institutions include TTSH, NUH, IMH, NHGP, NSC, NUS and Singhealth institutions. The feedback for the Harvard Macy Institute’s trainers and the course were excellent. The programme incorporated multiple learning formats, including group discussions and presentations, interactive exercises and case-based learning, and the participants find this mode of course delivery very effective and refreshing!
“I find the course tremendously useful. I learned so much about adult learning, and what it takes to be a good educator.”
~ Dr Nigel Tan, Consultant, NNI
"The components and principles taught in this course are very illuminating, and it gets us thinking trying to teach in a more effective way. We also make a lot of friends during the course, and we gave each other a lot of ideas in teaching and resolving problems."
~ Dr Ong Say How, Deputy Chief, Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, IMH
