Inaugural "Workplace Based Assessment Using Mini-Clinical Evaluation Exercise (Mini-CEX)" for Clinician Teachers

The mini-CEX is a method to assess students’ or trainees’ clinical and professional skills in the ward, on ward rounds, in Emergency Department, or in outpatient clinics. Though originally designed by the American Board of Internal Medicine, it has been adapted and is now used by many other specialties. The mini-CEX provides an excellent opportunity for the students / trainees to gain structured feedback from their consultants about their progress, and also aids the learning process during their training.

On 29 & 30 Jun, the Institute of Medical Education (ICE) conducted 3 sessions of the Mini-CEX Workshop, which is designed to train clinician teachers to use the mini-CEX as a formative assessment tool with their students / trainees. Each session was originally targeted at 30 participants. However, the response was overwhelming and we had to increase the class size to 50 for each session!

The participants feedback that the workshop was very useful, especially the role-playing sessions which allowed them to perform the scoring exercise after viewing a resident’s clinical encounter with a patient. We will be organizing another session in January 2011, to cater to those who were not able to get into the June class.
